June Roundtable Prayer

Our Akron Roundtable speaker was Evalyn Gates Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland's Museum of Natural History whose topic was “Science: A Portal to the Future”

Here's my prayer:

Spirit manifest in the laws of the Universe, ever remind us that You are subtle but not malicious.

Help us bring to light hidden matters of soul and space so we can recognize the energy that drives us apart and value the attraction that brings all together.

Now bless us and our words, this food and these friends, that together we may shine like stars, working for the satisfaction of the desires and needs of all and the achievement of harmony and beauty in the human relationships. Amen.

The fist and last lines are based on quotes by Albert Einstein. The middle section nods at Evalyn Gates' book: Einstein's Telescope: The Hunt for Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe

John 14:1-14 & 1 Peter 2:2-10

Some thoughts on the Rapture and how showing our work is much more important than the correct final answer.

May Akron Roundtable Prayer

Our Akron Roundtable speaker was Richard K. Vedder Professor of Economics, Ohio University whose topic was “Why College Costs Too Much and What We Can Do About It”

Here's my prayer:

Higher Power, as we consider the cost of education, we thank you for the dreamers who founded institutions, the generous who funded them, the planners that built them, and the staff, administrators and teachers that bring learning to life.

We also pause to remember all those who have paid more than we ever will, those who served their country in the armed forces, who sacrificed so that generations that follow would have the opportunities they would die for.

Now may wisdom come into our hearts,
and knowledge always be pleasant to our souls;
may prudence watch over us,
and understanding guard us all our days. Amen.

The last section is from Proverbs 2:10-11 (NRSV)

March Akron Roundtable Prayer

Our Akron Roundtable speaker was Gary Hanson Executive Director, The Cleveland Orchestra.

Here's my prayer:

Creator of the Music of the Spheres,
may we hear not only the melody played by human desire
but also by the sustained chords of creation
as they move us through time and space
closer to harmony with You
in a great chorus of humanity. Amen.
