Lost or Missing a Puzzle

Jesus told a story about a shepherd who left 99 sheep to go find 1 who was lost.

I wondered about that decision. Shouldn't one stay and protect the 99 instead of risk them for just the possibility of getting the lost 1 back?

I thought about the difference between lost and missing. Something is lost when you stop looking for it. Until then it is missing.

Think of jigsaw puzzles. The picture could have 1,000 pieces but if there is 1 piece missing...it is broken, unfinished, even when 99.9% complete. I completely understand searching the carton, cushions, carpet and cat for the piece and being unable to rest until the missing is restored to the place reserved for it in the picture. Until the last piece is in place, you have a puzzle not a picture.

I understand a God who doesn't rest looking for each of us because He needs every one to complete his creation and turn this puzzling world into his beautiful creation.

Hope God finds a place for you to fit in today.

The Missing One

Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.'- Luke 15:4-6 (NIV)
