Bailout Plan

Automaker CEOs travel to Washington, DC this week to seek billions in bailout money. This time not by corporate jets, but by hybrid cars. (I guess traveling in their own cars is Detroit's version of sackcloth and ashes.) The news is full of commentaries about using billions of the taxpayer's money to save the big three American automakers.

Hearing people talking about how CEOs should pay, (make them push a car four hundred miles to DC, at thirty-four thousand dollars per step, like a walkathon?) makes me think of another bailout. One not deserved; given to folks who "didn't get it" who had every chance to do the right thing but choose the easy way to personal profit instead.

In Christ, God bailed us out. We don't have to pay God back, show God a repayment plan, nor even "drive American". God saw were were bankrupt with no chance of earning our redemption, so we forgave our debts and wiped away our sins. Even before we asked. Before we were even born, Christ had our bailout plan in place.

We'll see what happens to our automakers' bailout hopes. But we know that the most important bailout has already been approved and paid in full.

Bailed with Nails
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. -- Colossians 2:13-15 (NIV)
